Bruce Barker and his team at Elite Executive Events hosted the ‘Do A Trek To Remember’ challenge in Brisbane on 31 March.
There were more than 60 participants who took on the 23 kilometre endurance trek from Mt Nebo to Enoggera Reservoir at The Gap through the D’Aguilar National Park, with the team of intrepid participants raising more than $9,000 for Dementia Australia.
Below, Alisa Kiley, Anita Flint and Olivia Hicks of the event’s Hickey’s Go Hiking team answer a few of our questions …
What inspired you to take part in the Do A Trek To Remember event?
Over the last couple of years, our family has been caring for my grandmother (Anita’s mother) who has been steadily declining with dementia. We have a large family (my grandmother has six children) and while they have all shared the load, it has been a full time job caring for her, managing her risks and the sheer worry and anxiety that goes with not knowing what is next and how the situation can be improved. Doing this trek seemed like a good way to help.
How did you fundraise for the event, and what tips would you give others trying to fundraise?
We each shared the page with all of our networks, friendship groups, work colleagues, families etc. It wasn’t difficult to raise funds and we were surprised at the number of people who had a story or experience of caring for someone with dementia.
What was the most challenging and/or most rewarding part of the Trek?
Most challenging? The blisters! Most rewarding? Training and trekking with family, having the support of the wider family on board, feeling like we were doing something to help the cause. We had a fabulous support network – throughout the trek we fed back pictures and progress updates to the wider family via messenger. We even sent an audio clip of our footsteps crunching on the dirt track with the bell birds and whippet birds in the background. We tried to take the rest of the family on the journey with us!!
Do you have plans to participate again next year?
Absolutely! Next year the team will be back with more family members on board. Look out for team Hicksys go Hiking in 2020!

Thank you in particular to Bruce and his team for organising this community fundraising event. It is because of people like Bruce and his support that Dementia Australia gets to do what it does.
